Capturing Light and Atmosphere with Pastel

by Sandra Nunes

Brazil

The rich color, texture, immediacy and luminous character of soft pastel turns it into the perfect medium for plein air painting. It is highly versatile and it works as a bridge between dry and wet media.

In this beginner/intermediate workshop, Sandra Nunes focuses on developing form through light and shadow, exploring the relationship between color and atmosphere as well as the use of creative methods of pastel application to convey mood to your paintings.

Students will be able to:

  • respond to the beauty of nature 'en plein air' with soft pastels.

  • paint on dark, light textured paper (Canson Mi-teintes)

  • work on heavier textured sanded papers (UART)

  • interpret light on a painting for maximum impact.

  • use color to create the impression of depth and mood to the painting. (aerial perspective)

  • select colors for dry and wet underpainting as keys to their personal expression.

After demonstrations, students will be assisted individually with the process of creating their own paintings, using the techniques they have just learned.

4 hours of instruction, demos and painting time each day. Open to all adults above the age of 18. Suited also for seasoned painters. Used medium of your choice. Registration is required.

Capturing Impressions with Color and Light

By Tiffanie Mang

San Diego

Often times when painting outside, we do not have a lot of time to record every detail because as Monet once stated, 'We truly only have 20 minutes before the light changes'. In this workshop, plein air gouache artist Tiffanie Mang will demonstrate how to capture the essence of a landscape with energy and emotion. This workshop will focus heavily on the importance of composition before color through small value studies. In the second half of the class, students will dive into the basics of color mixing and color relationships, which is what makes a painting come alive after good value structure and composition. Through this workshop, students will learn to not record literally what they see in front of them, but to capture the soul of the subject matter in their own way on canvas.

Capturing figures in plein-air

During this workshop the instructor showed how an understanding of basic shapes and light source will enable the painter working on location from life to capture simple figures quickly  without the use of a stationery model. A single figure, a crowd of people or a herd of livestock grazing a field  will often add life to a plein air painting, but an extensive knowledge of anatomy is not essential for these quick gestural images.
